Visitors and citizens of Walters see the American flag displayed in front of businesses throughout our city numerous times during the year. The placing of the flags started approximately fifty years ago with the Jaycees Club, the Lions Club, and the present-day Rotary Club. The Rotary Club puts the flags out in the morning and takes them up in the evening on New Year’s Day, Martin L. King, Jr. Birthday, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, the Walters Rodeo Parade, Labor Day, Columbus Day and Veterans Day.

The Rotary Club currently have spaces available for memorials at a cost of $30 per year. If you have a loved one that has passed or is still living and you would like to commemorate them with a displayed flag, or if you just want to fly one for yourself or your business, contact a Rotary member and a flag will be displayed for that person or business on Broadway. The flag memorials already displayed are in honor of Nova Richardson, Elroy Cooper, Ernest Smith, John Johnson, Don Best, Alvin Booher, Gene Wetsel, Jerry Pinkerton and Harold Bone

Betsy Ross made the first American flag. The Flag of the United States of America is a symbol of freedom and liberty to which Americans pledge their allegiance. ... The flag’s 13 alternating red and white stripes represent the 13 original colonies. Its 50 white stars on a blue field represent the 50 states within the United States. The flag has been used throughout America’s history to display our nationalism, as well as our rebellion, and everything else in between. The flag is so important that its history tells the story of America itself. It represents the freedom, dignity, and true meaning of being an American.

We know or should know what the American Flag stands for. Freedom! At least that is what it means to me.
