Walters Teacher of the Month & Staff Member of the Month

Sonia Herring - I have lived in Walters my whole life and I’m a proud 1984 alumni. My husband of 37 years and I have raised 3 kids, all grown. I have volunteered at the school since the 90’s, then in 2017 was hired by the school. Currently, I am the HS Secretary and love every crazy minute. It’s a blessing to be around young minds every day.

Charla Dedmon is a native and WHS alumni of Walters and received her BA with a triple major in Music Education from SWOSU. She taught music at Country Club Hgts. Elementary in the Lawton Public School system for ten years before coming back home in 1980 to teach Middle School Vocal Music, High School General Music and Varsity Choir and served in numerous extra-curricula duties. She’s been “retired” for several years but remains part-time on the school staff in the vocal music department: active organizing music events for the community churches and civic organizations; Miss Walters Scholarship Pageant Director and serves as Music Director for Adult Choir and pianist for the First United Methodist Church.

Throughout the years her students have been selected to FFA State Choruses; SWOK JH and HS All-Region Honor Choirs; OMEA and OCDA All-State Choruses and awarded a copious amount of first place Superior medals and plaques that include Outstanding Choir - Walters Mixed Choir at Little Dixie ECU Fall Choral Festival District and State OSSAA solos, ensembles and concert choirs; received the OSSAA trophies for Outstanding Chorus Treble, Men and Mixed Choruses and the most prestigious honor in State competition, SWEEPSTAKES AWARD. They also unselfishly share their talents performing for community, church programs and featured singers of the National Anthem at Comanche County Tournament for several years.

Mrs. Dedmon served as SW Oklahoma All-Region Honor Choir Chair and Advisory Committee; Jr. High and High School SW All-Region Honor Choirs accompanist; elected three terms as OCDA Association SW Representative Board Member; President-Elect, President and Past-President of OCDA; Oklahoma Music Educators Association All-State Chorus Chair; OMEA Choral Vice-President; OMEA All-State Quad Chair; awarded OMEA Exemplary Music Educator honor and recipient of OMEA Hall of Fame.
