A Temple landmark was destroyed by fire during the early morning hours Wednesday when bitter fivedegree weather delayed firemen getting their pumping equipment working to full capacity. Destroyed was the two-story Travelers Hotel, located two blocks west of the main part of the business district. Critically injured was Mrs. Mary Beck, who with her husband, I. A. Beck, operated the hotel. Mrs. Beck was seriously burned about the face, neck and shoulders, and on her hands and arms. Her husband had burns on his face and neck. Merle Rylant, Temple fire chief, said sparks from a woodburning stove in the lobby probably gave it the start. Mrs. Othelia Varner, who lived in an east downstairs apartment, got out safely with her possessions, with the help of her son-in-law, Ben Bilbrey, and others. Mr. and Mrs. Beck operated the hotel for many years. It was constructed in the latter part of 1902 and early in 1903 as a hotel for Colonel French. His daughter, Mrs. S. A. Jones, her husband and daughter, Dora, moved into the place and operated it for a year. A Mrs. Humphrey took over the place in 1904, and presumable the Becks followed her in its operation. Its name had not been changed through the years...Roger L. Willard and Miss Janis Cooper solemnized marriage vows November 23, at Boulder, Colo.
