A new grocery store will be opened in Walters at the old Fairmont Ice Cream store location, Sam Swyden, who is moving here from Sayre, announced this week. The new store will have a complete new stock of staple and fresh groceries... Earl B. Spencer and Dr. Mollie Scism Thursday afternoon were appointed to membership on the Walters school board in a special called meeting. Last week Gov. Marland appointed Henley Berendzen, Jerry Hayes and E. R. Marsh to fill vacancies created by the removal of C. L. Merriott, W. C. Stamper, Billie Burgess and Sherb Fisk...Mr. and Mrs. Joel Carter are parents of a daughter, Ladora Jane, born September 26...A son, James Leonard, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Ewing Sunday, September 25...A new house is being built on the Alva Smith farm in the Essaquanahdale community. The old house burned on September 4. Mr. and Mrs. Luther F. Dixon will occupy the new home when it is completed...Mr. and Mrs. A. L. McCoy, of the Ahpeatone community, announce the birth of a baby girl, Mary Vernell, September 9.

A marriage license was issued to James Thomas, 80, and Maggie Murtle Brown, 69, both of Temple...M/Sgt. and Mrs. Lonnie J. Morse, Fort Hood, Texas, have chosen the name Jerry Pickens for their son born August 31. Mrs. Morse is the former Bobbie Nell Durbin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Durbin, Walters. Mrs. Ora Lee Robinson, Lawton, is the paternal grandmother...Mrs. Ralph Hertzler placed first in crocheted afghan at the Oklahoma State Fair in the national wool needlework contest and was declared the sweepstakes winner. Her entry will go to the national contest. Mrs. Etta Homburg, of Walters, was first place winner with her entry of a white crocheted sweater, and was runnerup in the sweepstates of that division. Mrs. Elmer Henderson, of Walters, placed fourth with a hand-knitted sweater.

William Miller, general manager of Cotton Electric Cooperative since 1975, announced this week that he will be leaving his position to go with a wholesale generation and transmission cooperative at Tampa, Florida. Miller first joined Cotton Electric in May, 1966, becoming general manager upon the retirement of Don Dage...A daughter, Megan Rachelle, was born to Adrean and Melinda Sturgess on September 16. Maternal grandparents are Dean and Frances Reece, and the paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Sturgess and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ray, all of Walters...Shawn and Dalena Bowers announce the birth of a son, Jeremy Shane, born Saturday, September 17. Maternal grandparents are Kay Griffin, of Walters, and Jerry Sellers, of Burkburnett. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Butch Bowers, of Temple...Sherry and Bob Nance announce the arrival of a son, Bobby Nicholas, on Tuesday, September 6...Mr. and Mrs. Tom Brown, 110 E. Ohio, Walters, will be honored with a reception September 24 in the First United Methodist church to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Don Brashears, Odessa, Texas, December 30 at an Odessa hospital. He has been named Micharl Kelly. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Roger, Odessa. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Brashears, Temple...Lt. Charles Dilks, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Dilks, was recently promoted to captain in the air force.

..Mrs. Fanny Jeffrey, vocal music instructor, received word Tuesday of the naming to the all-state chorus of five Temple students. They are: Janet K. Boles, first soprano; June Kindred, first alto; Linda Knight, second alto; Pat Henry, second tenor; and Carroll Newberry, first bass.
