Being Humble!

Mac Davis used to sing a song: O Lord, it’s hard to be humble, but I’m doing the best that I can. It was funny, but for most of us, it is true! I don’t have a problem trying to be humble.

The world says that if you want to be successful, you have to climb to the top. Some work their way up the ladder and others take well planned out short cuts. It can be a tough trip, having to shove, fight, claw, and gouge your way to the top of the heap. The devil will fool you into thinking that you must promote self to the max and it doesn’t matter who you have to hurt or run over along the journey!

As we look at the world today there seems to just be too much shovin’, fightin, clawin’ and gougin’ going on. Yeah, you may become “successful” by the world’s standards but there is a cost! And who is going to help pay for your success?

Jesus teaches us to love and to care about our fellow man while the world shows us we are to be king of the pile and it don’t matter who gets stepped on along the way!

But some of y’all are thinking, “I have to take care of myself. I’m gonna get stepped on if I don’t do the steppin’.” There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. (Prov. 16:25 nasb)

If we allow Jesus to be our Boss, then a whole lot of “stuff” is gonna have to be different. Humble won’t be nearly so hard! In James 4:10, James writes: Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall life you up. (kjv) I love that verse!

You know…when the Lord lifts you up, you’ll quit stepping on other folks. You can’t help it. With Jesus as Boss, you’ll see things a whole lot different.

Did y’all know that it’s hard to recognize pride in yourself? I know, right? It’s been said that pride is the only disease that makes everyone sick except the one who has it. Some call it vanity. Mac Davis couldn’t wait to look in the mirror ‘cause he somehow became better looking each day.

Are we so deep into pride that we can’t see it when we look in the mirror at ourselves?

Many moons ago, Carly Simon had a song titled, “You’re So Vain.” The words at the end say: and... You’re so vain, I’ll bet you think this song is about you. Don’t you? Don’t you?

Well, are we so vain we think this scripture somehow doesn’t apply to us?

We don’t have a problem with pride. We have plenty of it. And everyone around us will agree.

Country people, by their nature, try to help other folks, but to whose glory? For an example, I know some guys who take pride in the fact that they don’t charge “strangers” even a dime when said stranger gets stuck in the snow or mud. It’s like a notch on their 4x4 shifter every time they get to pull one of ‘em out. But as followers of Christ, we must give God the glory in all things. Whether you win the buckle at the ropin’ or get to see a new foal being born, give Him credit for the great things He hath done!

It is true…Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is the only way! Just turn your life over to Him. You ask, “But how do I go about it?” Well, you have to have a talk with Him! We call it praying. In your own words confess Him as Lord; say something like:

“Lord, I realize I have made a mess of my life. You call it sin, and I’ve done plenty of that. I know that You died for my sins on that ole’ cross. I know you went to the grave, but death couldn’t hold you! Jesus, I’d really appreciate it if you would come in and be Boss of my life. And with Your help, I’m ridin’ for you from now on. In Jesus name, Amen

Choose Jesus, choose life and let your light shine! And find a Bible believin’ church where you “fit in” and know, grow, and follow Christ! Tell others! See y’all at church and keep PRAYIN’ for HIS HARVEST! Pray for the rain! Amen
