Oklahoma’s first experiment in using convict labor to make her school land more productive is working at Camp Walters in Cotton county--and the prisoners like it. Each week day 56 men convicted of crimes ranging from forgery to murder go to the fields in Cotton, Comanche, Stephens and Jefferson counties to set up soil conservation control systems under the direction of 12 technical men employed by the State Commissioners of the Land office. Located eight miles east of Walters in the center of the four-county area, the project resembles a typical CCC camp in appearance and operation. Entering the camp site over a road built on the contour, the visitor sees only a group of similar, unpainted shacks. Closer inspections will reveal a large camp office, a large mess hall, two long rows of bunkhouses, a laundry with showers adjoining, a light plant and boiler room, a latrine, a water storage tank and a small lake which provides a reserve water supply and a swimming pool. Inmates built the shacks and in their spare time have planted 500 trees, bermuda grass and flowers on the grounds...Mrs. H. A. Watts is in the Walters hospital as a result of leg injuries she received in the storm at her home in the Taylor Store community last Friday...Jack Benge, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Benge, is now taking some schooling with the Venezuela Gulf Oil company at Houston, Texas, and will sail in a week for Venezuela, where he will be stationed probably for the next year as an employee of the Venezuela Gulf Oil Company and the Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Co.
