As I reflect on the significance of Christmas, I am reminded of the blessings that surround us. During this last month of the year, it is certainly easy to get swept up in the busyness of the end-of-year and holiday season to-do lists. However, we must not forget the values that unite us during this festive time.

December is a time for family traditions, celebrations and even generosity to others, and one of the core principles of Christmas is the spirit of giving. This holiday season, let us be mindful of those less fortunate than us. Whether it is donating to local charities, volunteering at local shelters and centers or simply by reaching out to a neighbor in need, there are countless ways we can make a positive impact on the lives of others. By embodying the spirit of generosity, we reinforce the values that make our communities strong.

We should all take time to pray for our armed forces stationed overseas during tumultuous global conflicts, far from their family, friends and loved ones. We also think of their families as they struggle with having them missing from their tables while they sacrifice so much for the safety of our citizens. And that serves true as well for our nation’s first responders including law enforcement, firefighters and those serving on the front lines in the medical community. These selfless servants are who keep our country safe and moving so we can enjoy these holidays safely and in good health.

The holiday season also provides time to reflect on the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As a Christian, this holiday holds profound significance. The message of hope and love reminds us of the values that bind us as a resilient nation. Amid political differences, this season provides an opportunity to set aside our divisions and focus on what unites us all.

May the values of faith, giving and gratitude guide us into the beginning of the next year. As your holiday celebrations continue, whether you share the same faith as myself or celebrate something else, I wish you, your family and loved one’s immense joyfulness as you gather throughout the rest of this season.
