The Dahlia Garden Club of Walters held their annual Appreciation and Membership Luncheon October 4, 2023 at St. Patrick Catholic Church Hall. The theme “Happy Harvest” was carried out through the Fall decorations on each table. Members of the club provided the Pot Luck meal and desserts.

The meeting was opened with prayer offered by Wendy Zimmerman, Club treasure. The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, led by MaryAnn Holman, Club Parliamentarian. The Welcome was given by Melanie Spence, President.

Guests included many from the community who help the garden club with projects or promote their activities, prospective new members and Patio Garden Club members from Marlow, Presidents and members of the other Southwest District Garden Clubs including Grandfield Rose Unit.

The program was presented by Carolyn McCabe, President of Oklahoma Garden Clubs, Inc. and Nationally Accredited Flower Show Judge. She presented a program on Honey Bees. Most informative about their lives, their jobs and their life expectancy. She brought us a treat Baklava made with her honey. It was enjoyed by all. She also gave away a ½ pint of honey from her bee hive. The lucky recipient was MaryAnn Holman.

The meeting ended with the presentation of the centerpieces at each table being awarded to the one person at each table whose birthday was closest to our honored guest and program presenter, Carolyn McCabe, President, Oklahoma Garden Clubs, Inc. from Noble, OK.

Melanie Spence, Club President and also Southwest District of Oklahoma Garden Clubs, President invited the members of those District Garden Clubs to stay for their fall Board meeting.

A report was given by each club and plans for the upcoming year were discussed. The District Spring Convention was discussed. Place and date to be announced in November.

Dahlia Garden Club next meeting will be Wednesday, November 7, 11 a.m. Following the meeting youth from the school and community will come at 3:30 p.m. to work on posters to be entered in the National, Regional and State contests. We always have lots of winners. National contest is Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl. National winners receive a trip to Washington D.C. for the celebration. Regional contest is the Bird Posters. State Contests include these and 8Butterfly, Wildflower, Spunky Squirrel, Litter & Pollution, and Conservation. Monetary prizes are awarded for 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd and Honorable Mention. All supplies are provided by the club.
