Walters city commissioners will order the city hall vacated as soon as they can find a building in which to house city offices and the public library, Paul Mershon, mayor, stated Thursday. Action of the city commissioners followed the reminder of Carl Garner, present state fire marshal, that the building was condemned in June, 1937...A daughter, Maxine, was born March 10, to Mr. and Mrs. Victor Max Phillips, who reside west of Walters...A son, Robert M., Jr., was born March 18 to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gunn.

Mrs. Inda Lou Whitehead, 19, wife of Jackie Whitehead, died Sunday morning at a Lawton hospital as a result of a two-car smashup Saturday night two miles west of Walters on Highway 5. Dale Gay Reece, driver of the car Mrs. Whitehead was in, and John R. Lamond, Jr., of Lawton, driver of the other car, had minor injuries. The Reece car evidently turned left toward a county road into the path of the Lamond car...Sp/4 and Mrs. Franklin Copeland. Walters, have chosen the name Tammy Melissa for their daughter born March 6. Maternal grandparents are Ada Newman and Taft White, of Temple. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Copeland, of Fulton, Ky...Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Abbe, of Walters, are parents of a son, Joel Lee, born March 7. The new mother is the former Miss Mickie Zachary, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Zachary, of Randlett. Mr. and Mrs. Clint Abbe, of Walters, are the paternal grandparents... In a special service Sunday morning, March 22, Douglas Franklin, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Franklin, of the Hulen community, will be presented his “Local Preacher’s License” by the Walters Church of the Nazarene. The Local Preacher’s LIcense is the first step of the Church of the Nazarene toward ordination.

Mayor Gerald Hayes was unopposed in his bid for reelection to a place on the Walters City Council when filing closed last Tuesday...The United States Achievement Academy recently announced that Margie Barham has been named a 1984 United States National Award winner in Leadership. This award is a prestigious honor that very few students can ever hope to attain. Margie attends Walters high school and was nominated for the award by Don Mitchell, counselor at the school. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Jarrell, of Walters...Kerry Fryer has sold her interest in The Bake Shop to Diana Howard. She will continue her catering business.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Jones, Amarillo, on Saturday, June 18. He has been named Darren Lee. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. C. Wade Sparks, Temple...Kenneth W. Avens, airman apprentice USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Avens of Temple, is serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Shangri-la conducting underway training at Guantanamo Bay.
