School Board Candidate Filing Set to Begin Monday, December 7, 2020

Candidates for the Board of Education in three Cotton County school districts will file their Declarations of Candidacy beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, December 7, and continuing Tuesday and Wednesday, Cotton County Election Board Secretary Shellie Hart said today.

Hart said the official filing period ends at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9. All candidate filings will occur at the Cotton County Election Board office, 301 N. Broadway St. Room 2, in Walters, Hart said. THE COURTHOUSE IS CLOSED AT THIS TIME DUE TO COVID CONCERNS SO YOU WILL NEED TO CALL THE ELECTION BOARD OFFICE AT 580-875-3403 TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO FILE. PACKETS CAN BE DOWNLOADED AND FILLED OUT PRIOR TO COMING TO THE ELECTION BOARD OFFICE BY VISITING THE STATE ELECTION BOARD WEBSITE AT WWW.ELECTIONS.OK.GOV AND LOOKING UNDER THE CANDIDATE FILING TAB. REMEMBER: DECLARATION OF CANDIDACY FORMS MUST BE NOTARIZED AND YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FINDING A NOTARY.

The Board of Education positions at stake will be filled at the Board of Education Primary Election scheduled February 9, 2021 and the Board of Education General Election on Tuesday, April 6, 2021. If only two candidates file, the position will be filled at the General Election. If more than two candidates file, a Primary Election will be held. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the total votes cast in the Primary Election, the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes will meet in the General Election.

Candidates may file for the following offices:

Walters School District---Office No. 5 – 5 year term

Temple School District---Office No. 5 – 5 year term

Big Pasture School District---Office No. 5 – 5 year term

Big Pasture School District---Office No. 1 – 4 year unexpired term
