The mighty dollar

A dollar doesn’t buy much these days but collector Bruce Morelan owns a silver dollar that is worth at least $10,000,000, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. That’s the price he paid in 2013 for his very rare dollar coined in 1794. It set a record for the most ever paid for a rare coin. Morelan thinks it is worth more than what he paid for it and so he’s putting it up for auction once again. It’s called the “Flowing Hair” dollar and it was one of 1,785 that were struck in a single day not long after the dollar became the official currency of the U.S. and they were used as souvenirs for dignitaries. It’s estimated that only about 130 to 140 of those silver dollars exist today. But Douglas Mudd, the curator and director of the American Numismatic Association’s Money Museum, says that there’s evidence Morelan’s coin was, indeed, the very first one that was struck.
