Sale of Rice’s Cash Grocery to Si Rogers and Bob Clark, owners of the White-Way Grocery and Market at Marlow, was announced this week. The store will be opened here Friday under the management of Ray Cochran and Gentry Castleman of Duncan, and will be known as the White-Way Grocery and Market...The Red River was transformed into a raging torrent by heavy downpours Saturday and Sunday. The bridge south of Randlett was struck by debris Saturday night, a portion collapsed, plunging a car with five Burkburnett residents in it, into the raging waters. Only one of the occupants survived... Miss Janette Odom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Odom of Devol, became the bride of Raymond Smart, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Smart of near Temple, on May 18, at Burkburnett...Miss Louise Allgood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James L. Allgood, south of Walters, and Gene Bowles, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Bowles of Union Valley Community, were married at Walters May 15...Mr. and Mrs. Victor Calfy announce the arrival of a son at their home on West Nebraska street, Sunday, May 19. He has been given the name Frankie Dee Calfy.

Mr. and Mrs. Don Best, Walters, have chosen the name Derek Lee for their son born May 16...Walters annual rodeo will not be staged this year because of the extensive damage done to the facilities west of Walters by the small, but vicious, tornado two weeks ago...James Finchum, long-time Walters city police officer, submitted his resignation effective last Monday. Finchum has been a member of the Walters police department for 15 years...Best All-Around students in the Walters High School senior class for 1960 are Leona Van Ness and Ray McCoy...Capt. and Mrs. Eugene Rhoads and daughters of Turner Air Base, Albany, Ga., arrived Sunday for a visit with his parents here, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Rhoads, before leaving for a three year tour of duty at Hahn Air Force Base in Hahn, Germany...Cotton County’s population for 1960 was tabulated as 7,957, which is a decrease from the final 1950 figure of 10,180 and the 1940 figure in excess of 12,000. Walters was the only populated place in the county to show an increase. The latest count for Walters is 2,787, and increase of 44 over 1960. Temple dropped to 1,281, Randlett to 353, and Devol to 117.

Walters father and son, Elmer Ray Pevey, 52, and Elmer Dale Pevey, 28, lost their lives by drowning in Waurika Lake Friday of last week while on a fishing expedition. They had lived in Walters the past year and built and repaired cotton gins...Danny Coston, son of Mr. and Mrs. Grady Coston, will be the featured twirler at Cameron State University at Lawton for the next four years...Jerry Thompson was presented the Star Chapter Farmer award at the Temple FFA Banquet, May 9. Tom Ricketts was named Star Greenhand. Kelly Hooper, sophomore, was selected as Chapter Sweetheart for the next year. Dennis Byford is Advisor of the chapter...At the Walters FFA Banquet, May 5, Jon Whitehead was named Star Chapter Farmer. Bobby White was named Star Greenhand.

Mrs. D. M. Spann left last week for Los Angeles, Calif., to spend almost a month visiting her daughter, Mrs. John S. O’Dell, and the new grandson who was born on Wednesday of last week...Wendell Sparks, former coowner of the Farmers & Ranchers Cafe, is the new owner and operator of the Terminal Cafe, across the street from the post office. The cafe is air conditioned...Miss Loyce Elaine Zahnd became the bride of Morris Glenn Rogers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Rogers of Temple, July 23 in Florence, Ala. Both of them will be students at Abilene Christian College.
