Veterans who have exhausted or are close to exhausting their VA educational benefits may quality for the Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship. This is a new program for Post 9/11 GI Bill® veterans that gives extra VA educational benefits to students training in high demand fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The Rogers STEM Scholarship, a provision of the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Act (Forever GI Bill®), will provide up to nine months of additional Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits (to a maximum of $30,000) to qualifying veterans and Fry Scholars seeking an undergraduate STEM degree or who have earned a STEM degree and are seeking a teaching certification.

“This is an exciting new opportunity for our Post-9/11 GI Bill® veterans or VA Fry Scholars to finish their degree,” says Vicki Henson, Cameron University Coordinator of Veteran Affairs. “We strongly encourage any veteran who has exhausted or is close to exhausting their Post-9/11 benefits or who is a Fry Scholar to contact the CUVA office and let us assist you in applying for this program. It covers a wide range of fields of study.”

Training in STEM degrees typically requires more credit hours than other programs. The Rogers STEM Scholarship provides support for this additional coursework, offering students the opportunity to finish their STEM degree program or teaching certification with significantly less student loan debt or out-ofpocket costs.

“Cameron University’s Office of Veterans Affairs is ready to assist current student veterans in applying for the Rogers STEM Scholarship,” says Henson. “The addition of the Rogers STEM Scholarship to the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Act (Forever GI Bill®) might also be of interest to veterans who have met the minimum degree requirements but who are not current students. We will be happy to assist them in re-enrolling.”

The Cameron University Office of Veterans Affairs is available to answer questions and provide assistance to applicable students. The office is located on the third floor of North Shepler. For more information, call 580-581-2301.

Eligibility is open to students pursuing a degree in a STEM field and who have completed at least 60 standard or 90 quarter credit hours toward a degree and who have or will soon (within 180 days of application) exhaust entitlement for the Post 9/11 GI Bill® program. Recipients must be pursuing a post-secondary degree that requires more than 120 semester (or 180 quarter) credits (hours) for completion.

In addition, eligibility is also open to those who have earned a post-secondary degree in a STEM field and who have been accepted or enrolled in a teaching certification program. Priority will be given to individuals who are entitled to 100% Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits and to those who require the most credit hours.

Fry Scholars are eligible to apply for the Rogers STEM Scholarship. The Fry Scholarship provides Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits to the children and surviving spouses of service members who died in the line of duty while on active duty on or after September 11, 2001.

Eligibility covers a wide range of academic programs. Students must be enrolled in or have earned a degree in agriculture science or natural resources science program; biological or biomedical science; computer and information science and support services; engineering, engineering technologies, or an engineering-related field; a health care or related program; mathematics or statistics; medical residency; physical science; or science technologies or technicians.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will begin notifying Rogers STEM Scholarship applicants by November 2019 if they qualify for the scholarship. More detailed information is available at: https://benefits.va.gov/gibill/fgib/stem.asp
