Cameron University’s “CU Become a Teacher” workshops return to southwest Oklahoma this fall with a slate of events aimed at community members who are interested in entering the field of teaching. The free, specialized workshops focus on the multiple pathways for becoming a teacher, including options for individuals with a degree in a non-education field to complete a graduate degree in Education and for working professionals seeking a bachelor’s degree in Education. Each session runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend. A free dinner is provided for all who pre-register. “Our communities need more individuals to enter the teaching profession,” says Dr. Dana Hilbert, Chair, CU Department of Education. “Many districts continue to be unable to find highlyqualified, dedicated teachers to join their faculty, resulting in larger class sizes and forcing many administrators in Southwest Oklahoma schools to make difficult decisions concerning scheduling and hiring. We want to positively impact our local schools by increasing the number of certified teachers in the area. The CU Become a Teacher workshops, launched in 2015, has been successful in attracting Oklahomans to the teaching profession. The workshops allow interested individuals to explore the multiple pathways to becoming a certified teacher in Oklahoma, and we encourage those individuals to begin their teacher education at Cameron University.”
CU Become A Teacher will offer information to those who have a college degree, those who have earned college credit but have yet to earn a degree, and those who have yet to earn college credit.
