High school students who have an interest in majoring in music are invited to attend Cameron University’s Music Preview Day, slated for Friday, November 8, in the Music Building. Music Preview Day provides an opportunity for interested students to meet the music faculty, explore performance opportunities, and get an in-depth look at what it means to be a college music major. From 9 to 11 a.m., attendees will meet with faculty members, observe private music lessons and learn more about attending Cameron University. They are invited to sit in on the weekly recital by music students at 11 a.m. as well as rehearsals of the Concert Band at 12:30 p.m. and the Percussion Ensemble at 2 p.m. Campus tours will also be available.
Music majors and non-majors have the opportunity to perform in numerous musical ensembles. Both instrumentalist and vocalists will be found on-stage throughout the academic year. Ensembles and courses offering performance opportunities include Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Civic Symphony, Percussion Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Community Band, Concert Choir, Centennial Singers, Civic Chorale, Music Theatre, Music Accompaniment, and Opera Workshop. In addition, chamber ensembles for winds, strings, and other instruments are featured. Students may also elect to take individual or class lessons in piano, composition, clarinet, voice, saxophone, trombone, tuba, viola, flute, percussion, violin and other disciplines.
Cameron University offers three music degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Music Education. Each program emphasizes the development of musical knowledge and associated performance skills. The Bachelor of Arts in Music culminates in a degree which, when combined with a minor course of study, will prepare the student for careers in music not including teaching or graduate music study. The Bachelor of Music degree program is a professional degree which, through a major/minor course study, prepares the music graduate to be a music performer or to be prepared for further graduate music study. The Bachelor of Music Education degree prepares the music graduate to be certified as a music educator in either band, orchestra, or choir at the public school level.
