Burning Prohibited

City of Walters Code of Ordinances § 92.08 prohibits burning of any combustible material within the city’s fire district. This includes wood, garbage, refuse, leaves, trash, street cleanings, paper wrappings, cardboard, yard clippings, grass, bedding, waste paper, or any other discarded, unusable or uncared for items. The Code will allow burning of combustible fuel only in a properly constructed firebox. Ideal fuel for this purpose would be commercially prepared fire logs, untreated firewood, twigs, and leaves. Trash and refuse may only be burned in an enclosed building with a proper incinerator.

A properly constructed firebox or fire-pit is constructed out of a fireproof material. The pit must be surrounded by at least five feet (5’) of gravel, sand, concrete, asphalt, or other noncombustible ground cover in a level area. A screen type covering must cover the burn area sufficiently to prevent any embers from being carried to surrounding areas by the wind. The fire-pit should be at least 25’ from structures, trees, or shrubbery.

There are multiple portable fire-pits on the market today, however if you chose to build a stationary pit, please check with City Hall to see if a Building Permit will be required. Questions and concerns may be addressed to Code Enforcement, 875-3337.
