Two Walters High School students, Blaise Morgan and Phelim Jiang, received $300 and $150 checks from Lawton’s VFW Post 5263 Commander Erica Wilson-Traxler and veteran Ron Albert. The pair presented the checks to the boys at the school after the post’s usual April awards ceremony had to be cancelled due to Covid health precautions. For the contest, the students wrote an essay responding to the question: “What makes America great?” followed by a recording of the essay for audible judging. This fall, all 9-12th grade students are again eligible to enter the contest, writing to a new prompt: “Is this the country the founders envisioned?” Middle school students can enter the Patriot’s Pen, a VFW contest requiring a simple 300-400 word typed essay: “What is patriotism to me?” Official rules and entry forms may be found and printed online. WHS English teacher Jessica Spence will coordinate the contest for local students, who will then compete at the Duncan VFW post in November.
