On August 4, 2020, the City Council voted unanimously to enter into a contract with Waste Connections for waste disposal services. With the ever-increasing cost of repair and maintenance on the heavily overworked equipment and months of deliberations and research, the Council determined that signing an agreement with Waste Connections would be the most beneficial option for the residents ofW alters. The new services will begin on September 1, 2020. Account holders should expect a few changes as the transition approaches.

At this time, we expect residential collection days to change. These changes will be communicated by mail, newspaper, area Public Notice posting, and the City of Walters’ Facebook page. You may also call City Hall prior to September 1st if you miss the information through other means. Residential dumpsters will no longer be available. If you currently have a dumpster at your residence, please call City Hall 580-875-3337 so we can assist you with other options that may suit your needs better. Construction dumpsters will be available for a limited duration under certain conditions and circumstances. This type of dumpster is not for household trash.

All trash must be bagged before being placed in the polycart. On your specified collection day, Polycarts must be placed with the polycart lid opening toward the street (meaning the handle is away from the street), and placed within 5 feet of the edge of the street by 7 am. Polycart must be at least 3 feet from any other object, polycart, mailbox, utility pole, sign, fire hydrant, or vehicle. The lid of the polycart must be closed or trash may escape and end up on your property. The driver will not exit the truck to pick up trash that escapes from an over-filled polycart before pickup or when dumping it. Cameras will be utilized to clear up any questions or concerns.

Included in this contract, account holders will have an option for weekly pickup of bulky items. Bulky items will consist of old furniture, appliances, televisions, bagged leaves or grass trimmings, boxes and packaging, and bundled tree limbs (bundles not to exceed 50# or 48” in length). The weekly volume per account holder is three cubic yards and items have a weight limit of 100 pounds each for the safety of collection personnel. Bulk collection will be on FRIDAY ONLY and bulk items may be stacked curbside the night before. You may call Waste Connections at 940-592-5050, Monday through Thursday to schedule a pickup for Friday. Please see the Waste Connections Bulky Waste flyer on page 2 of The Walters Herald.

Items that will not be accepted for a bulk disposal include any appliance that contains Freon or other gaseous refrigerants (unless tagged by licensed technician certifying refrigerants have been removed), batteries, liquid waste, regulated medical waste, asbestos waste, radioactive waste, or tires. Bulk items will not be collected from a residence that does not utilize the city’s garbage service. There will be no sharing of services between accounts or customers.

Residential account holders that have bulk items outside of the guidelines set by Waste Connections, may contact City Hall. City of Walters bulk service will pick up most other bulk items at a rate of $50.00 per hour (one hour minimum) in addition to equipment fees (FEMA rates) and disposal fees. As a reminder, Temple and Lawton each have a landfill that may be utilized by the public.

Waste Connections will require account holders with special needs or those physically handicapped that need house-side collection services to re-certify their need with City Hall by providing a notarized medical certification of the need and further certification that the household does not have any other able-bodied person living in the home as soon as possible but no later than October 1, 2020.
