Body

The eighth annual Red River Crops Conference is just about here. This conference is tailored to agricultural producers in the Texas Rolling Plains and Southwest Oklahoma. The conference is set for January 20th and 21st, 2021 and was set to be held in Childress Texas this year. However, given the Covid-19 pandemic our country (the world) is currently experiencing we have been faced with difficult decisions on how to proceed with this year’s conference. After much planning and discussion both within our planning committee and with each university’s administrations, we have decided that the most responsible approach we can take with this year’s conference is to present it virtually via a Zoom webinar. While we thoroughly enjoy the personal interaction of the conference when we all come together the safety and well-being of all our attendees certainly takes precedence. We want you to know that the conference has once again been planned and will be executed as a joint effort of Extension personnel from both state institutions. We will continue to have a full day focusing exclusively on “cotton” issues (January 20th) and an additional day devoted to programming for “in season and other crops” (January 21st). While all the programs will be good I want to highlight two programs I think will be interesting for producers and that occur on seperate days of the conference. On Cotton day the Cotton Equipment Technology program presented by Dr. John Long, OSU, will look at work he has been doing on improving seed germination and emergence rates in the field and on the In-Season and Other Crops day Mr. Francisco Abello, Texas A&M AgriLife, will look at economic comparisons of perennial and annual grass grazing systems and guidance associated with these systems for producers. Since this year’s conference format is virtual, we are taking a different approach to our meeting times to hopefully not tie up the attendee’s whole day in front of a computer, we understand that can be difficult for various reasons. Therefore, the conference will start early in the morning, 6:30 a.m., and conclude by approximately 10 a.m. each day. We believe that even with the challenges of this year the conference will still present an informative and applicable program for regional agriculture producers. The cost of the conference remains at $25 and can be registered for at https://rb.gy/yoke1e. If you have any questions related to the conference feel free to contact either Kimbreley Davis at the Cotton County OSU Extension at 580-875-3136.
