What with the 10” of rain that I have received since Friday, I thought about crawdad fishin and how it was always a favorite thing to do growin’ up. I didn’t eat them, just tried to catch them. Andy Griffith sang a song in an episode of his show that went like this:

You get a line and I’ll get a pole, Honey,

You get a line and I’ll get a pole, Babe.

You get a line and I’ll get a pole,

We’ll go fishin’ in the crawdad hole,

‘O Honey, ‘O Baby mine.

Brings back memories don’t it. We went fishin’ for crawdads in the bar ditch down the road when I was a kid. Others call them different names such as crawfish, crayfish, and mudbugs, and fresh-water lobster.

Oh, to recall the childhood of long ago: chasin’ lightnin’ bugs, puttin’ on a cape and flying off the barn, and even goin’ snipe hunting. By the way, man was not meant to fly by using his arms for wings. I can remember rafting down the flowing waters of my local creek. Most of the time, it’s just a dry creek bed; but please remember, it’s important to never enter any creek or river that is flooding.

Like I mentioned, I never was one to eat crawdads. It seems kind of strange to eat a creature that looks like that. But I’d admit, I never was too crazy about the lobster restaurant either. But it is kind of cool to look at the lobster tank.

I had friends that would eat grasshoppers and cockroaches, but I never took to it. They say if you eat cockroaches covered in chocolate they taste real good! I did sort of sample a chocolate covered grasshopper once. They came in a sealed bag from the store. They weren’t too bad…kind of crunchy.

If I’m gonna eat somethin’ that comes out of the water, I prefer catfish and I prefer it fried. Some folks can cook up catfish pretty good. I’m not here to critique restaurants, but a certain catfish place down by Waurika is hard to beat. Catfish always seems to bring out the multitudes.

Speaking of multitudes, have you ever tried to feed a whole bunch of folks on short notice? It seems like there is never enough food. Oh, sure if you have a large banquet or a pot luck you will have planned for enough food, but I am talkin’ about when you’re on short notice…like when a bus breaks down in front of your house.

The disciples were faced with just such a situation. Jesus was speaking before a large crowd, and it had become late in the day. Being a desolate area, the disciples wanted to send everyone home so they could all eat. But Jesus had a plan. Look in Matthew 14 starting about verse 15:

But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!”

They said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”

And He said, “Bring them here to Me.” Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds, and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets. There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children. (nasb)
