Seventy-five new pupils have been enrolled in the Walters grade school since four women truant officers, paid by WPA funds, were employed the last of December to help bring eligible children to school. Some of the children had not been to school for three years...Resignation of Arthur Sweet, for two years football coach and language teacher at Walters highschool, was accepted this week, and Vera Sweet, his sister, was accepted to fill the vacancy. Sweet resigned, he said, in order to prepare for wrestling competition at the Olympic games to be held in Berlin in 1936...Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schneeberger and family, former proprietors of the store at Pumpkin Center, have recently moved to this community...Mr. and Mrs. Tony Mowles are parents of a son, Donald Gene, born Dec. 27. Mrs. Mowles is the former Miss Lavera Scheu...Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Lawler, Hastings, are parents of a son born Dec. 22.

Andy Flanagan, of Walters, began Tuesday morning his duties as assistant sergeant-at-arms in the House of Representatives at the capitol building in Oklahoma City. His appointment will continue throughout the legistative session...Miss Linda Kirkpatrick and Gordon Ray Dowlen were united in marriage Friday, December 23 in the First Baptist church in Temple. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Maudie Kirkpatrick and the late Mr. Jodie Kirkpatrick. Callie Mae Bobo, court clerk for the past 34 years, turned the reins of that office to Mrs. Lana (Driskill) Mallow Monday morning, after Associate District Judge David J. Aubrey swore the new county officers into office. Miss Bobo succeeded the late Clarence Jackson and took office in January of 1947, after being discharged from the U. S. Navy, where she had served as a WAVE...Steven and Cheryl Branstetter announce the birth of a baby girl, Rebecca Ann, born December 20... Miss Cheryl Veltema and James Wade Logan exchanged vows Saturday, January 3 in the First Baptist church in Walters. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. “Buddy” Veltema of Walters. The bridegroom is the son of Mrs. Doris Logan of Walters and Donald Logan of Marlow.

Leon Douglass will assume duties Monday as market manager and assistant store manager of the IGA Food Store, John Moates, owner, said Wednesday. Douglass formerly worked in the store and for the past year has been working in Wichita Falls as a butcher...Suzy Blair, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. C. Ted Blair, won first in the state speech contests Thursday and Friday of last week. Miss Blair placed first in dramatic literature in Class B. Also winning honors was Ann Lowe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Lowe, placing third in Class B. dramatic literature...The senior play, “Go West, Young Man,” will be presented Friday night, April 19.
