Oklahoma State University welcomed 68 of Oklahoma’s top high school scholars to its campus November 15 for OSU’s annual National Merit Day program. Those attending from Walters were: Brent Scott, son of Rev. and Mrs. Earl Scott; Russell Kinder, son of Travis and Janice Kinder, and Desta Kelley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Kelley...A marriage license was issued to William Allen Fields, 26, and Darlene Sue Grisham, 27, both of Walters...Cache Valley Lodge No. 530, AF&AM, will hold initiation services Sunday, December 14, at 2 p.m. in the lodge hall in Walters. A freak explosion last Friday caused painful, but not serious, injuries to Neal Shelton, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Shelton, southwest of Temple. Neal carried out some trash for his mother and threw it into an old well which is in the process of being filled. He lighted a match and tossed it into the well, when the explosion followed. Apparently some type of gas of an explosive nature had accumulated in the well and the match set off the explosion. It blew Neal approximately 10 feet backwards, burning his hair, eyes and face...John Poopie Moates announced this week that he had purchased the interest of Elvis Hutton in IGA Food Store and that he is now sole owner and operator of the store in Temple.
