Last week, while playing in the yard, Peggy Jo Sorrow, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Sorrow, stuck an ice pick in the pupil of her eye and for a week the attending physician despaired for her eyesight. Saturday, however, the doctor said there would be some vision and that, probably, visibility would gradually improve... Cliff Stimpson announced today the opening of a new station at the corner of Broadway and Highway 70, leased from Dave Boyer. This is the fourth station that Stimpson has opened since the inception of the Community Oil Co. about five years ago. Harry Poston has been named manager...Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Boren of the Elm Grove Community, are the parents of a baby boy they have named Bobbie Joe...Mr. and Mrs. Loy Dyke announce the birth of a son, Howard Loy, on Tuesday, July 30...Miss Mable Elliott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Elliott of near Walters, and Rudolph Klein, Jr., of Walters, was an event of July 22.

Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Dunbar, Walters, have chosen the name Karen Diane for their daughter born July 21. The new mother is the former Miss Marietta Martin...Mr. and Mrs. George Powell, northwest of Walters, were honored with a surprise shower Sunday, July 17, on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary...Mrs. Eva Lu Benge, who has handled the first grade work at Washington School in McClain County for the past eight years, has retired after 45 years in classrooms of Oklahoma schools. After teaching in rural schools of Cotton County, Mrs. Benge entered the Walters system, and in her closing years here was Elementary School Principal...Construction work on the new Walters Post Office building, which will be constructed at the corner of Colorado and Fifth streets, long occupied by Long-Bell Lumber Co., will get underway next week...Camp grounds on the “island” at Sultan park, north of Walters, is ready for the district Boy Scout camporee Friday and Saturday, said Bing Miller, District Chairman of camping and activities. Miller said Tommy Parrack, General Chairman for the camporee, has put in long hours getting the area in shape, with the help of the local Boy Scouts.

Smith, of Walters, was recently honored at a special dinner held at the Hilton Inn Northwest in Oklahoma City, commemorating his 40 years of association with The Bankers Life of Des Moines...Roy and Phyllis Veach announce the birth of a son, Roy Wayne, July 25. Maternal grandfather is Richard Gillentine, of Perry, Texas. Paternal grandmother is Dolly McKay, of Walters... Ruth Bailey has sold The Lady Bug Dress Shop to Dillard and Glenda Kelley...Mr. and Mrs. James Warren Jarrett will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary August 3 in the Patio Room of the First State Bank in Temple. James W. Jarrett and Ruth Haney were married August 7, 1930, at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Millard Smith, in Temple.

Spec Sanders, former Temple high school grid star, was credited with sparking a 28 to 7 victory by the New York Yankees over the Chicago Rockets in an All American football conference game Friday night...Sgt. Thomas Brown, a Temple man who was captured with the fall of Bataan shortly after the start of World War II, and who spent many months in Japanese prisoner of war camps, spent the weekend in Temple with his family. Sgt. Brown is now stationed at Tinker Field, Oklahoma City...An estimated 2,000 persons attended the open house at Richardson Motors last Friday, marking the re-opening of the business after being completely remodeled...Jack Roddy, Temple automobile dealer, purchased the building and six lots formerly occupied by the Dixon and Norman Garage at public auction Thursday. He plans to move the parts and equipment to his present garage location, the Kaiser-Fraser garage on East Main street.
