Nelda Dowlen

A Viewing will be held on Friday, March 8 from 9:00 am to 8 pm at Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Temple. A Memorial Service for Nelda Dowlen, 92, Temple, OK will be held later on, Saturday, March 30, 2019, at the Walters Church of The Nazarene at 10:30 A.M., Rev. Paul Metcalfe officiating. Memorial Donations can be made to Walters Church of the Nazarene FLC.

NeldaRuth(Griffin)Dowlen Was born to Olen Smith and Ozella Mae (Wallace) Griffin on June 8, 1926 at Temple, OK and departed this life in Temple on March 4, 2019 at the age of 92 years, 8 months and 24 days.

Nelda grew up in the Duncan and Temple areas, graduating from Duncan High School 1944. She married John Ed Dowlen May 18, 1946 at First Baptist Church in Temple. Through the years she worked for the US Naval Ammunition Depot, Mare Island CA, Temple Public Schools, Temple Milling Co. and Tri County Elderly Nutrition. She retired April 15, 1981.

Mildred Marie Woods was born to Leslie Henry “Slim” and Ruby Fay (Cornwell) Turner on May 11, 1940 at Elmore City, OK and departed this life on March 1, 2019 at Hastings, OK at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 18 days.

Mildred grew up Chattanooga, OK, where she graduated from high school in 1958. She had married James Henry “Jim” Woods on May 17, 1957 at Chattanooga where they lived until making their home in Walters in 1964. She did baby sitting for several years before moving to the Waurika Lake in 1981. She also owned and operated Lucky’s Drive Thru, retiring in 2007.

Jewell Green

Graveside services for Jewell Green, 79, Temple, OK were held at the Temple Cemetery at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 28, 2019 under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Temple.

Jewell Mozell “Dobie” (Keck) Green was born to Jim and Liza Ida Bonnie (Richards) Keck on April 20, 1939 at Waurika, OK and departed this life in Temple, OK on February 26, 2019 at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 6 days.

Jewell grew up mainly at Martha, OK. She married Billy Ray Green on November 15, 1958 at Durant, OK. They made their home at Altus, OK and then Palacios, TX before moving to Temple, OK in the late 1970’s. She was employed at Haggar’s for a time and also worked as a cook and CNA at Temple Manor Nursing Home. She loved fishing, gardening and helping Bill do cotton harvest.

Darrel Farris

Funeral Services for Darrel Farris, 79, Walters, OK were held at Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home Chapel, Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 10:00 a.m., with burial in the Walters Cemetery.

Darrel Lee Farris was born to Guel Lee and Verna Gladys (Johnson) Farris on February 24, 1939 at Faxon, OK and departed this life in Dallas, TX on February 22, 2019 at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 29 days.

Darrel began life in the Faxon area and then the family moved to Lawton where he attended Lincoln Elementary and then Central High School in Lawton. He served his country honorably in both the National Guard and Reserves. Eventually he went to work for Southwestern Bell in 1962 and retired after 39 years with the company in 2001.

Darrel had married Judith Arlene (Warren) Hartline on January 24, 1969 in Lawton and the couple had 8 children between them. They made their home in Lawton until moving to Walters in 1986.

Johnny W. Powell

Johnny W. Powell passed from this life on February 14, 2019 at home with his family surrounding him. He was 80 years old.

He grew up and graduated high school in 1956 at Temple, Oklahoma, and continued to stay close to those roots his whole life.

He was a faithful son and brother, a devoted husband and father, a loyal friend, and a generous member of humanity.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Freta of 44 years, his parents Charlie and Florence, his sister Charlene Smith, and his son John Kirk.

He is survived by his son Wes and wife Shellee, step son Johnny Dennis and wife Margaret, step daughters Sandra Kay and Deborah Lynn, eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He will be missed dearly by many.

James “Wayne” Johnson February 23, 1925 ~ January 29, 2019

Wayne went to be with his Lord on Tuesday. Wayne was born on Feb. 23, 1925 in Stroud, OK to Jim and Viola (Thompson) Johnson. Wayne and his brothers Wilford & Bill and sister Eva were raised in Stroud and later in Walters, OK.  Wayne graduated from Walters High School in 1943 and shortly after graduating served his country as a Merchant Marine during WWII.

Upon his return from the war he met and courted a girl that would turn out to be the love of his life, Ms. Velma Dean “Deanie” Moore. The two married on March 28, 1947 and were blessed with two sons, Ron and Charles. Wayne and his family were very active members at Walters First United Methodist Church and he served in many capacities at the church. Wayne was affiliated with the Lions Club, was an assistant Boy Scout Troop Leader, and started and coached Pee-Weefootball in Walters. He was well respected in the community and had a servant’s heart. He loved his family dearly and worked hard to support them.
