Dortha Jane Ewalt

Dortha Jane Ewalt, 95, of Carnegie, Oklahoma passed away peacefully on April15, 2017 in the Carnegie Tri County Municipal Hospital. Funeral Service were held Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church, Carnegie, OK, with Rev. Richard Tinker officiating. Interment in the Carnegie Cemetery under the direction of Ray & Martha’s Funeral Home in Carnegie.

Dortha was born to James John and Pearl Jane (Zimmerman) Smith on March 11, 1922 south of Mountain View, Oklahoma.

She graduated from Sedan High School, south of Mt. View and attended 1 year of college at Hobart Jr. College. She married A. A. (Bud) Ewalt on August 1, 1941 in Hobart, Oklahoma. Together they ran a farming operation in the Carnegie and Mt. View area. She owned and operated Ewalt Shoes for several years in Carnegie, OK.

Kevin Walker

Kevin Walker, 56 year old Altus resident, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2017 at his home in Altus. Kevin was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on September 10, 1960 to his parents James Rodrick Walker and Daisy Marie (O’Kelly) Walker. Growing up Kevin lived in Washington State until the family settled in Temple, Oklahoma where Kevin graduated class of 1977 from Temple High School. Shortly after high school he joined the United States Army and served his country for twenty-three years achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was stationed mainly in Germany with his last duty station being in California where he received his retirement orders. After the Army Kevin moved back home to Temple and lived in Hobart for a short time where he worked for the Kiowa County Sheriff with the K-9 detachment. He later moved to Altus and worked as a Deputy Sheriff for Jackson County. With his health starting to decline, Kevin most recently worked at the Jackson County Jail.

Wanda Scherler

Funeral Services for Wanda Scherler, 87, Edmond, OK were held at First Baptist Church in Walters, OK on April 15, 2017 at 10:00 am, Rev. Tim Billy officiating. Interment in the Walters Cemetery under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Walters. Wanda Mae (Thomas) Scherler was born at home in western Cotton County, OK, January 18, 1930 to Myrton Alfred and Bessie (Brinkley) Thomas with Beulah Mae Brinkley serving as midwife. Wanda passed peacefully into the arms of God on April 10, 2017 at the age of 87 years, 2 months, 23 days in Oklahoma City after a brief illness. Wanda grew up in NW Cotton County, OK near the farm of her grandfather Frank Thomas which was purchased during the Big Pasture opening in 1906. She attended Cache Valley School through 2nd grade till it closed, she then went to Ahpeatone School and graduated as valedictorian of the senior class in 1947. Wanda attended 3 semesters at Cameron A & M Junior College in Lawton.

Craig Gower

Graveside Service for Craig Gower, 64, Temple, OK was held at the Temple Cemetery, Tuesday, April 18 at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Kent Simpson officiating under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Temple. Craig Orville Gower was born to Thad and Alsie Louise (Stephens) Gower on September 19, 1952 at Lawton, OK and departed this life in Temple, OK on April 15, 2017 at the age of 64 years, 6 months and 27 days. Craig grew up at Temple, graduating from THS in 1970. In the 70’s he went to work as a welder for Diamond S Trailers in Walters before going overseas to Iran where he worked on pipeline with Brown & Root. He returned home and worked for Shelby Trailers at Comanche and then Smith Welding at Waurika before helping build the Elliot Plant in Duncan. Making Temple his home, Craig has spent a lifetime working as a welder and farmer. hhhHe was an outdoors guy and enjoyed fishing, going to the lake, racing and going to the casino. He loved spending time with his grandkids.

Frances Laverne Brown Zisman

Frances Laverne Brown Zisman was born April 3, 1938, in Sterling, Oklahoma. She graduated from Walters High School in 1956. She attended OCU from 1956-1957 where she was a Surrey Singer and a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. In 1962, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree of Education from Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, Oklahoma followed by a Master’s Degree of Education from Southwestern State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma in 1970. Frances married Allen Lamar Zisman on February 15, 1958, in Fletcher, Oklahoma. Mrs. Zisman taught at many Oklahoma Schools including Bessie, Cordell, Frederick, Roosevelt, and Walters. She retired from public school teaching in 1997. She enjoyed teaching reading and literature and loved the antics and stories of her middle schoolers. Frances was a member of the Oklahoma Retired Teachers’ Associate and a delegate to the Association of South Central Oklahoma Government. Mrs.

William Welch

Memorial Service for William Welch, 71, Walters, OK will be at Open Door Church of God, Walters, Thursday, April 6 at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Roger Noland officiating, with Military Honors by the U.S. Navy. William Ray Welch was born to Cecil William and Lorene Irene (Marple) Welch on October 17, 1945, at Lawton, OK and departed this life in Wichita Falls, TX on March 31, 2017 at the age of 71 years, 5 months and 14 days. Willie grew up at Shawnee, OK. He then joined the United States Navy at age 17 to begin a 30 year career of service to his country. He made several moves through the years but was mainly based in San Diego, retiring as a Senior Chief Aircraft Mechanic. He had met Marianne J. Snelling on Valentine’s Day 1984 at the Chief’s Club in San Diego. Upon his retirement they moved to Oklahoma and in the Waurika Lake area in 2000 and eventually moved to Walters in 2010. She preceded him in death in 2015. Willie enjoyed hunting, shooting, fishing and loved his dogs.

Steven R. Griffith

Funeral Services for Steven R. Griffith, 28, Temple, OK were held at Open Door Church of God, Walters, OK, Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., Rev. Roger Noland Officiating. Burial in the Temple, Cemetery under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home. Viewing was from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday at Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Temple. Steven Russell Griffith was born December 24, 1988 in Wichita Falls, TX and departed this life in Wichita Falls on March 29, 2017 at the age of 28 years, 3 months and 5 days. Steven grew up at Temple, Oklahoma. He married Melissa Sue Denney on September 2, 2007 at Open Door Church of God in Walters and they have made their home in Temple. He has worked as a farm and ranch hand for the Bachand family off and on since he was 14 years old, but his real passion has been hunting hogs. He was a “Jack of all trades.” Steven loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, buying, selling and working on cars, and tinkering.

Johnny Kent Phillips

Johnny Kent Phillips passed away on March 12, 2017 at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of fifty-two. Johnny was born on August 2, 1964 in Walters, Oklahoma to Arthur and Violet Phillips.

Johnny married the love of his life, Kay Ward, on July 9, 1994 in Walters, Oklahoma. To this union brought 3 sons: Brandon, Trent, and Carl and one daughter Blaklea.

Johnny loved riding his Harley with his wife and their close group of friends. He also enjoyed riding horses and spending time with his grandchildren.

Johnny was retired from Lawton Fire Department, Comanche County Sheriff’s Department, and also from contracting work in Afghanistan. Johnny was a hard worker and fighter having sustained 3rd degree burns over 20 per cent of his body while a firefighter in Lawton.

Doris Nance Taylor

Funeral services for Doris Nance Taylor, 82, of Walters were held at First Baptist Church, Walters, OK, Saturday, March 4, 10:00 a.m., Rev. Jay Driskill officiating. Interment in the Walters Cemetery under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Walters. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made either to the Walters Public Education Foundation, 418 South Broadway, Walters, OK 73572 or to the Walters Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 485, Walters, OK 73572.

Doris Nance Taylor was born to Mary Lydia (Berry) and Walter Elvis Nance, August 6, 1934 at Walters, OK and departed this life February 28, 2017, in Marysville, KS, at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 22 days.

James D. Mathers

Memorial Service for James D. Mathers, 69, of Temple, OK was held at Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home Chapel, Monday, February 27, 2017 at 11:30 am, with Military Honors followed at 1:00 pm at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, OK.

USAF Ret. MSgt James Donald Mathers was born February 5, 1948 at Modesto, CA and departed this life in Oklahoma City, OK on February 18, 2017 at the age of 69 years and 13 days.

James grew up at Modesto, CA, graduating from Thomas Downing High School in 1967. He then joined the United States Air Force, serving his country honorably in Vietnam. He returned home to California where he eventually married Kathleen Joan Kovich in August of 1977 at Modesto.
