Kevin Smith Retires After 20 years Of Services

After 20 years as a Volunteer for the Walters Fire Department, Kevin Smith has retired! The retirement party was held at the Walters Fire Station on Thursday, October 17th. There were approximately 60 present, including volunteer firemen, past retirees, fulltime firemen and their spouses present along with Kevin’s wife, Kathy, his children and other family members. Also present was Mayor David Mitchell, Councilmen Steve McCammon and Richard Anderson, their spouses, and City Clerk Dollie Glenn and spouse. Everyone enjoyed the dinner catered by Bill’s Catfish. As per tradition, the one retiring foots the bill for the meal!

Sign-up for Angel Tree

The Cotton County Angel Tree will be accepting requests to sign your child/children up for the Angel Tree beginning Monday, October 21st thru Friday, November 15th. The program is only available to those families that are currently receiving food stamps thru Cotton County DHS. Children between the ages of one thru sixteen are eligible to be signed up for the Angel Tree. (children must be one (1) year old at the time of sign up) Requests should be made in person at the Cotton County Department of Human Services, 1501 S. 7th, Walters, 580/875-4000.

Dahlia Garden Club Holds Annual Luncheon

The Dahlia Garden Club held their annual luncheon at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on, October 2, 2013. Guests attending were Dollie Glenn, City of Walters, Secretary and Gina Suson, City Librarian. Shirley Johnston, Vice President called the meeting to order in the absence of the President and she asked BeLindia Gwoompi to ask the blessing before the meal. The tables were decorated with orange tablecloths, burlap runners, pumpkin centerpieces and scarecrows lending to the suggestion that fall is in the air. The delicious meal was served buffet style by the members.

Southwest Oklahoma Fishing Report

Texoma: Elevation 4 ft. below normal, water 82 and clear. Largemouth and smallmouth bass fair to good on crankbaits, plastic worms baits and spinnerbaits at 5-15 ft. in upper ends of creek channels. Striped and white bass fair to good on sassy shad, live bait and slabs at 10-25 ft. in the river channels.

A ZOMBIE WALK for Drug free Awareness

Red Ribbon Week 2013 brings some new ideas from Walters Public School Staff. The Walters Elementary School (WES) Drug Prevention week will begin Wed. October 23rd with “Life is more Colorful Drug Free”. The classes have been assigned different colors to wear. Thursday, Oct. 24th “Team up against Drugs”- Team building Challenge activities. (Wear camouflage and bandana) Friday, Oct 25th “Form an Alliance against Drugs- Red Ribbon Rally.” Fall Party- wear your costumes.

Community Chest Drive begins October 21, 2013

The annual Community Chest Drive begins its journey to raise funds next week on October 21st and ends with a Pancake Breakfast on October 26th. Volunteers will call on businesses and individuals asking for your donations to help the Walters community. The goal of the Chamber of Commerce is to benefit its citizens and the Community Chest makes this possible. Some of the activities it funds, or helps fund are: youth sports programs, Walters Public Schools organizations, community organizations, and other charitable requests throughout the year. This is the only resource the Chamber has available for these worthwhile activities.

Cotton County Election Board News

Voters in Cotton County who want to have absentee ballots mailed to them for the November 12th, Special Countywide Election, should apply now, County Election Board Secretary, Shellie Hart said today. Although the county election board can accept applications for absentee ballots until Wednesday, November 6th, Mrs. Hart urged voters who want to vote by absentee ballot to apply early.

October 5, 2013 Walters was a happening place, with the Thirteenth Annual Walters Car Cruz and the City Wide Garage Sales. Despite the cold weather the turn out was well over expectations. With the sun coming out around lunch time the people started to come out and there was lots of fun and competitions!
