Illegal Tobacco Sale To Minors Threatens Children’s Health

Oklahoma tobacco retailers are increasingly not complying with state law regarding underage tobacco sales. Last year, Oklahoma tobacco retailers posted an overall non-compliance rare of nearly 18 percent. That’s troubling for local prevention professional who say that the rising underage tobacco sales rate means that some retailers are placing profit ahead of you lives. It also risks federal funding that supports vital Oklahoma health initiatives.

In July 1992, Congress enacted the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health administration Reorganization Act (PL 102-321), which includes an amendment (section 1926) aimed at decreasing youth access to tobacco.

Walters Chamber Of Commerce Held Heritage Festival

The Walters Chamber of Commerce held the first Heritage Festival on Saturday, June 2, 2018 on Broadway St. in Walters.

There were several vendors selling their wares and showing off quilts and various other things. A dunking tank was on hand, a water slide to cool off on. Plenty of Snow Cones could be found. Needed you face painted, you could even have that done.

Six Walters High School Seniors Receive Educational Foundation Scholarships

The 2018 senior class received scholarships from the educational foundation at their awards assembly on Thursday, May 17. The awards were presented by Judge Michael Flanagan, a foundation board member for many years.

Mrs. Peggy Spannagel Mason of Odessa, Texas and a 1955 Walters High School graduate has donated $30,000 for scholarships for 2018 and future years. They will be recognized as the J.E. Mason Memorial Scholarship in memory of her late husband, better known as Joyce Mason when he was a student and graduate in 1956.

Dicamba Training Videos Now At County Extension Offices

Walters, Okla. (May 21, 2018) – Federally mandated dicamba training is now available via video at Cotton County Cooperative Extension Office located in the courthouse.

Producers and applicators who have not yet completed the required training can view the material on video at any of the state’s 77 county Extension offices.

Calli Ray - State Champion 2A Pole VaultOklahoma Meet of Champions

On Saturday May 5, 2018, Calli Ray won the 2A State Championship for girls Pole Vault at the state track meet in Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City.

She is a 2 time State Champion also winning in 2017. She won Regionals at Alex, Oklahoma on April 28th qualifying her for the State Track Meet.

RRTC names Outstanding Students for 2017-18

Red River Technology Center instructors recently recognized their Outstanding Students for the 2017-18 school year at the school’s annual awards assembly on May 3.

During the assembly, which was held once in the morning and afternoon, instructors were given time to honor students with the Outstanding Student of the Year awards. Instructors chose students from both the morning and afternoon programs to recognize based on attendance, participation in class, leadership and citizenship, among other qualities.
