A local Comanche Nation woman came close to taking the title of Miss Indian World during last week’s Gathering of Nations Powwow in Albuquerque, N.M.

Shelby Mata, 22, of Walters, came in as second runner-up for the title among 17 contestants. Top prize went to Cheyenne Kippenberger, Seminole Tribe of Florida, Hollywood, Fla., and Cordelia Falls Down, Crow and United Keetowah Band Tribes, Crow Agency, Montana, was the first runner-up.

Mata, who has served in many roles as a princess and representative of her Comanche people, called it “a great week full of events and sisterhood.”
