Col. Ret. USA, Marion David Ernest went to his Lord on Sunday, July 17, 2016. Service: 10:00 AM, Thursday, July 21, 2016, Lakeside Baptist Church, Interment: 2:15 PM, Thursday, July 21, 2016, Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. Visitation: 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Wednesday, July 20, 2016, Wiley Funeral Home, Granbury, Texas. Dave was born on May 26, 1939 to Clarence David Ernest and Anetta Fae Buckelew Ernest at Stratford, OK. He married Ruth Maxine Phillips on January 24, 1959 in Walters, OK. At age 9, his family moved to Duncan, OK where he learned the game of football. Dave played in high school and college and was a lifetime fan. Upon graduating from Oklahoma State University, Dave was drafted into the US Army and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant of Field Artillery at Fort Sill, OK in 1963. In 1965, Dave was sent to Vietnam and served as an Artillery Battery commander and received numerous medals. Some of those medals were a Silver Star, 3 Bronze stars with V device and two Vietnam Valor awards, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Plam and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star. After earning a master’s degree in International Studies at the University of Illinois, Dave attended the Armed Forces Staff College. He returned to Vietnam and served as an operations officer in Mac V Headquarters. In January 1977 until June 1978, Dave commanded the 3rd Battalion 3rd Artillery. Colonel Ernest retired in August 1983 with 20 1/2 years of service. He was preceded in death by his father and mother. Dave is survived by his wife Maxine of 57 years, two sons: Brian Ernest of Pflugerville, TX and Brad Ernest of Wichita Falls, TX, two grandchildren: Lindsay Ernest of Houston, TX, and Payton Ernest of Wichita Falls, TX, also his brother Ed Ernest and wife Kathy of Katy, TX and his sister Linda Kincannon of Duncan, OK. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Lakeside Baptist Church or Friends of Animals of Acton or a charity of your choice.
